Houston home sales show biggest decline for years

The Houston area real estate market has experienced the largest decline in home sales in more than a decade.

The number of single-family homes sold in Houston in September was 5,061, 15.1 percent lower than in September 2006 and the largest year-over-year decline since April 1995, according to statistics from the Houston Association of Realtors.

Bayou City Art Festival

From KHOU, “The Bayou City Art Festival Downtown will take to the streets of downtown Houston October 13th through the 14th. It begins at 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. showcasing the works of 300 fine artists and 19 artistic media formats.

Congratulations to four Houston-area tech companies for being awarded funds through the Texas Emerging Technology Fund. These total nearly $4 million. Recipients included: ThromboVision Inc., Bellicum Pharmaceuticals Inc., Visualase Inc. and Laser Tissue Welding Inc.

MIDDLE-SCHOOL GIRLS REACH FOR THE STARS, SCIENTIFICALLY.

The “Sally Ride Science Festival” is coming to Rice University on Saturday, October 27 from 11am until 4:15pm and aims to boost middle-school girls’ interest in science and engineering and is sponsored by the Rice Space Institute. The festival includes workshops for girls taught by local scientists and engineers and workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support girls’ interests in science and math. Also planned are a street fair with booths, hands-on activities, food, prize drawings, music and an inspiring talk by Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a space shuttle mission. Advance registration is required; the cost is $18 and includes lunch.

Gulf storm could visit Texas coast late this week

A tropical disturbance that continued developing over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday could bring rain or even high winds to the upper Texas coast later this week.

Computer models predicted that the storm will come ashore somewhere between the central Texas coast and Alabama late Thursday or early Friday. The most likely location appears to be near the Texas and Louisiana border.

Because the heaviest storms are likely to wrap around the system’s eastern side, a landfall at the border would probably yield only marginal rainfall over Southeast Texas.
