A friend of mine has introduced into my list of radar topics (things I track for PR, personal or fun) the current greening trend. “Just watch the business news,” she tells me. “It’s everywhere.”

I don’t know that I believed her, until I started tracking. I hate it when I’m so wrong.

Are you ready for hurricane season? The ABC 13 Consumer Blog gives us Tips to get ready for a hurricane with your cell phone, which they got from AT&T. The tips cover ways your cell phone can help or play the focal point in your hurricane plan.

Houston-area eight-grader Anna DeSanctis won $10,000 for being one of the “top 10 youth volunteers for 2007.” The Houston Chronicle reports that she is a student at Holy Spirit Episcopal School.

M.D. Anderson just receive its largest gift ever from the T. Boone Pickens Foundation. As reported by the Houston Business Journal, “The charitable organization, formed late last year by the oil and gas industry leader and philanthropist T. Boone Pickens, has donated $50 million each to The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.”

The Christus St. John Hospital has begun a $7 million expansion/revamp into Nassau Bay, Texas. This adds more than 20,000 sq. ft. to the hospital’s emergency care, etc.

Cosentino North America, a Houston-based countertop maker, has hired Candice Olson as national spokesperson. Candice’s claim to fame is HGTV. Why? As reported by Houston Business Journal, “Candice brings in-depth knowledge of interior design and an engaging personality to her role as national spokesperson for Silestone — qualities that will generate valuable consumer awareness”

“Continental Airlines Inc. was one of only three major U.S. airlines to add workers in March, according to a report Tuesday from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.” (reported by the Houston Business Journal) The had nearly 3,000 more employees in March 2007 than in March 2006.

The Houston Public Library invites you, your friends and your neighbors to an ongoing author series where you will meet well-known authors from several genres. Relationships, mysteries and faith are just a few of the topics to be presented in the first programs.

As part of the year-long series, monthly events will be held throughout the city at neighborhood libraries. Attend one, or attend them all. Authors will read from one (or several) of their books, answer audience questions and talk about what inspires their writing. All events are free and open to the public.

The Big ReadThe Big Read is a communitywide reading program held in May 2007. Everyone in the Harris County metro area is invited to read Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club and discuss it with your neighbors and family.

There will be programs, activities and book discussions that focus on The Joy Luck Club and the Asian culture. To look for programs in your area, visit www.bigreadtexas.org.

This event is part of The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.

The Children’s Museum of Houston is going to open a satellite location on Sugar Land. The Children’s Myseum of Houston Discovery Center at Sugar Land Town Square will open on June 1.

The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area was one of three cities that has the largest fall in unemployment for March 2007. The unemployment rate for Houston was 4.1 percent. This news comes as the national unemployment rate for April is reported as rising.

Houston continues to lead the nation in late mortgage payments and foreclosures (I think it’s actually the county area that’s leading in foreclosures). Reportedly, “In the Houston area, 4.38 percent of loans were 30 or more days late during the first quarter of 2007, compared with 2.04 percent during the same period last year, according to data provided by Moody’s Economy.com.”

Picture This! A Youthful Perspective of Houston

View an expression of Houston from the perspective given by youth between the ages of 12 and 15 as a part of the H-E-B 5th Annual Multicultural Calendar. A traveling exhibit of their photographs will be on display at three Houston Public Library neighborhood locations. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

Houston town hall meeting

The City of Houston is holding a town hall meeting to discuss the city’s public safety.

From the Houston Chronicle:

A panel with Police Chief Harold Hurtt, Fire Chief Phil Boriskie, Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino and City Councilman Adrian Garcia, who organized the event, will address the city’s public safety issues.

Houston’s director of Public Safety & Homeland Security, Dennis Storemski, will discuss the Community Emergency Response Team program.

The program certifies and teaches citizens how to become first responders in emergency situations.

The meeting will be 6 to 8 p.m. at Ripley House, 4410 Navigation.

Cinco de Mayo in Houston

Looking to make a great Cinco de Mayo drink? Try the Mexicosmo, from Pico’s Mex-Mex:

1 1/2 ounces premium silver tequila

1 ounce Cointreau

1 ounce pomegranate juice

1/2 ounce fresh lime juice

1 maraschino cherry

1 lime wedge

Combine alcohol and juices in a shaker with ice and shake well. Place cherry at the bottom of a martini glass and attach the lime wedge to the glass rim. Pour the cocktail into the glass.

DOWNTOWN PARADE: LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) showcases cultural arts in its annual Cinco de Mayo parade, beginning at 10 a.m. todayin downtown Houston (see route on the map at right). The parade is followed by the Puertas del Arte festival noon-5 p.m. today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. Access www.lulac8.org.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF HOUSTON: Join the festivities during Cinco de Mayo Wonder Weekend. Play a traditional Mexican game. Las Americas Ballet Folklorico performs at 2 p.m. today.
